Basin Dynamics
Within the topic of "Basin Dynamics", we study the evolution of sedimentary basins, the formation of oil and natural gas, we identify petroleum migration pathways and dynamics both in carrier and non-carrier systems, and reconstruct thus the evolution of petroleum systems through geologic time. This highly interdisciplinary topic requires geophysical, geologic, and geochemical expertise. Seismic interpretation, structural geology, organic geochemistry, basin modelling, chemical kinetics and petroleum phase behaviour feature strongly here. The overarching project "Methane on the Move (MOM)", is directed toward improving our understanding of the contributions of organic carbon to the global climate change process throughout the Cenozoic to present day. Essentially all ongoing studies in the two subtopics provide input to MOM. Parts of this topic are the subject of Zahie Anka's Helmholtz Young Investigator Group.
