Research performed in the field of "Exploration Geology" forms a basis for (1) the utilization of geothermal energy from Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), and (2) the storage of CO2 in underground formations.
Research field of the rock physics group is the interdependency between physical properties of rock samples and their composition and structure.

Process- and Plant-Technologies
The field “Process- and Plant-Technologies” within Section 4.1 analyses and investigates those aspects of energy and process engineering which are related to the use of the underground as integral part of sustainable energy provision.
Within the thematic area “reservoir monitoring” the effects of natural and artificially induced flow processes in the subsurface are investigated.
Geothermal fluids are the transport media for subsurface heat, and, therefore, the essential substance of geothermal energy production.
