Section 3.3 Chemistry and Physics of Earth Materials

Head of Section: Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich

We investigate the properties of geomaterials. These include solid rock, as well as minerals, melts and fluids. In our work, we analyze the course of phase transformations and the reactions between different minerals in detail. We investigate the geochemical cycles in subduction zones, with emphasis on the role played by fluids. For this purpose, we have a variety of instruments with which we can study the behavior of various geomaterials at a large range of temperatures and pressures. In them, we can even simulate the conditions in the Earth's lower mantle. We also have special analytical instruments with which we can characterize the geomaterials in great detail, even down to scales of nanometers.
