CEDIM

CEnter for DIsaster Management and risk reduction technology

The CEDIM project, founded in 2002 as a common undertaking of the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), is dealing with various aspects of catastrophes, natural and man-made. Our Section participated in the sub-project Earthquake Risk under the project "Risk Map Germany", where a national seismic risk map was constructed combining intensity based probabilistic seismic hazard (our Section) with seismic vulnerability (Karlsruhe group ) and assets (joint Karlsruhe - GFZ group); Tyagunov et al. (2006).

The calculations were made on community basis, and maps of the mean damage ratio and seismic risk are shown below. A scenario approach based on data connected to the earthquakes in Albstadt, Baden-Württemberg on September 3, 1978, Roermond, the Netherlands on April 13, 1992 and Waldkirch, Baden-Württemberg on December 5, 2004 was also performed in this study.

CEDIM Verteilung der mittl. Schadensrate

Estimated distribution of the mean damage ratio (percentage) in communities of Germany for a non-exceedence probability of 90% in 50 years.

CEDIM Verteilung des seismischen Risikos

Estimated distribution of the seismic risk (millions of euro) in communities of Germany for a non-exceedence probability of 90% in 50 years.

A CEDIM glossary with relevant terms and definitions are found here.
