Adolf Schmidt Observatory for Geomagnetism (NGK)
The Adolf-Schmidt-Observatory for Geomagnetism in Niemegk is already operated by the GFZ Potsdam since 1992. Further magnetic observatories in international co-operations are overseen from here.
The main objectives of the Adolf-Schmidt-Observatory are to continuously measure the geomagnetic field and to determine the geomagnetic activity, in order to study the dynamics of the Earth´s magnetic field and its interactions with the Earth system.
Since 1930, the observatory is located 50 km SW of Potsdam, ensuring the continuation of the measurements started in Potsdam in 1887.
The observatory data contributes to:
- developing global geomagnetic field models (International Geomagnetic Reference Field, World Magnetic Model)
- developing regional models
- monitoring of interplanetary space (Solar Influences Data Analysis Center, International Service of Geomagnetic Indices)
- databases of observatory data.
The Niemegk observatory is member of the INTERMAGNET programm.
