The "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP)" provides seismic and magnetotelluric instruments and sensors for joint projects with universities and other research facilities. It is hosted by Section 2.2 "Geophysical Deep Sounding" of the GeoForschungsZenrum Potsdam (GFZ). Since its foundation in 1993 the GIPP has supported more than 160 geoscientific projects. The GIPP is part of the Modular Earth Science Infrastructure (MESI) at GFZ.

The proceedings of instrument supply on loan are laid down in "Guidelines for using instruments..." and "Rules of instrument supply on loan ...". For application see link "Application". A steering board, which convenes twice a year, evaluates the applications and makes recommendations. The decision for the allocation of the instruments is made by the Executive Board of the GFZ.

The next steering board meeting will take place in April 16, 2013.

Accordingly, the deadline for applications is March 16, 2013. The actual preparation of a project has to be coordinated with the Working Group GIPP, which is also reponsible for the GIPP technical maintenance.

Pool components:
Seismics/Seismology, DEPAS, Magnetotellurics

13.06.2012 | Fiber-Optic Gyroscope allows accurate set-up of seismometers

The "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam" (GIPP) of the GFZ has aquired a fiber-optic gyroscope which allows the highly accurate orientation of geophysical sensors. This gyroscope produced by the company IXSEA allows the orientation of sensors (relative to Earth's rotation axis) with a typical accuracy of 0.1° (secant latitude).                                                                                                                      ...more
