Tsunami Training Courses
Tsunami Training Courses, an GITEWS Project, Workpackage WP6100 (GFZ)
Responsible: Claus Milkereit
Indonesia is currently establishing the Indonesian Tsunami Warning System (InaTWS) in co-operation with several international partners; especially Germany who is contributing via the GITEWS project (German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System). The corresponding monitoring systems consist of seismic networks, tide gauge networks, buoys, and a GPS and satellite observation network. The processing and warning center is at the BMG Headquarters and regional offices.
Education and training of the warning centre staff, as well as the consulting of agencies, authorities and ministries in the Indian Ocean region, are the main focus of GITEWS Capacity Building. The annual training courses on "Seismology, Data Analysis and Tsunami Detection” last three weeks and focus on the new Tsunami Early Warning System installed in Indonesia. They offer the possibility to young scientists/engineers to learn the necessary background knowledge in seismology, geodesy, oceanography and modelling to work with the individual technical components, and how to use the system to find the information needed to start or to stop a Tsunami Early warning.
