Abstract (EDOC: 11457)

In recent years, high-quality magnetic observations have been obtained from a number of satellites. We discuss here issues regarding observatory and satellite data, like quality, spatial coverage and temporal distribution, in order to underline the need to improve the existing network. Only when combined with ground-based data can satellite measurements provide additional opportunities for studies, ranging from core flow, mantle conductivity and lithospheric composition to the dynamics of the ionospheric and magnetospheric currents. Therefore, a case is presented for the necessity of maintaining, and extending the ground-based geomagnetic network.
