The German Academy of Science and Engineering promotes an innovation-friendly climate in Germany. And the Academy itself is also prepared to undergo internal change: At a function on 21. October acatech presented its new organizational structure, with which the Academy can perform its tasks as a national Academy even more efficiently. acatech now has a dual leadership: Together with Joachim Milberg, Reinhard Hüttl will also represent the German Academy of Science and Engineering. The Director of the GFZ - German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam will strengthen, in particular, the substance of the Academy.

The Seismology-Team analyses the tectonic activity in the Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan - China border area after the quake of 05.10.2008. For the first time the three neighbouring states, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China, will cooperate cross-border to investigate the high seismic hazard of central Asia.

Reinhard Hüttl, Scientific Executive Director of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geosciences - GFZ, today received, from the hand of Berlin’s State Secretary of Science and Research, Dr. Hans-Gerhard Husung, the Cross of Merit, First Class, of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Reinhard Hüttl, Scientific Executive Director of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geosciences - GFZ, today received, from the hand of Berlin’s State Secretary of Science and Research, Dr. Hans-Gerhard Husung, the Cross of Merit, First Class, of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Husung carried out the ceremony, on behalf of the Federal President, at Potsdam’s GFZ. Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Reinhard Hüttl was conferred with this award for his merits in the work of the German Council of Science and Humanities.

On 19th. February 2008 the Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) officially commenced the operation of the new drill rig ”InnovaRig” at the geothermal drill site at Dürrnhaar (Bavaria). With this event, one of the most modern drill rigs worldwide, with a drilling capacity to a depth of 5000 metres becomes available.
