Job Vacancy No. 20/5/13 G
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association.
The Department 5 “Earth Surface Processes”, Section 5.1 “Geoecology and Geomorphology”, invites applications for a
PhD Position (m/f).
Project title: Solid matter budget of a steep mountain catchment
The successful candidate will work in the interdisciplinary research field of fluvial geomorphology, in an international, broad-ranging research group, on a field project exploiting existing infrastructure in combination with novel instrumentation. The study will focus on the Erlenbach, a scientific observatory in the Swiss pre-Alps, which in terms of sediment transport is one of best studied catchments in the world. The aim of the project is to obtain a deeper insight into channel-hillslope coupling and solid matter transfer in steep mountain streams. This will have further implications for stream morphology and dynamics, sediment yields and routing of solid matter through the stream system.
Tasks:
- Organize and conduct field campaigns in the Erlenbach mountain stream in Switzerland.
- Obtain high quality data on bedload transport, landslide motion, wood and gravel transfer and their size distributions.
- Analyze and interpret these data in the light of long-term observations in the Erlenbach catchment.
- Construct a solid matter budget (clastic sediment, woody debris) for the study reach.
Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in geology, geography, environmental sciences or engineering, or a related discipline.
- Good knowledge of English in word and text.
- Knowledge of GIS techniques and software.
- A willingness to spend longer periods of time abroad in the field.
- Experience with field techniques in fluvial geomorphology is of advantage (e.g., bedload transport measurements, pebble counts, surveying, use of laser scanners).
