The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association.

The Department 3 “Geodynamics and Geomaterials”, Section 3.3 “Chemistry and physics of geomaterials”, invites applications for a

PhD Position (m/f).

in the framework of the Emmy-Noether project “Melts and fluids in geomaterials: from first principles to geological processes” funded by the German research foundation (DFG).

Within this project, structural properties of silicate melts at high pressures and temperatures and their interaction with minerals will be investigated using molecular modeling techniques.

Tasks:

  • Development and parametrization of advanced ionic interaction potentials using electronic structure calculations in the framework of density functional theory
  • Performance of classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations
  • Prediction of physical and thermodynamic properties of silicate minerals and melts
  • Model validation by reference to experimental data
  • Presentation and publication of scientific results

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or master’s degree in Earth Sciences (main focus Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry), Physics, Chemistry or Material Sciences
  • Strong interest in the physico-chemical principles underlying geological processes and in systemic Computer work, ability of independent work organization
  • Preferably experience in programming and Linux operating systems
  • Good knowledge of English; willingness to work in international cooperation
