Wordmark GFZ Potsdam

Job Vacancy No. 21/5/13 G

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association.

The Department 5 “Earth Surface Processes”, Section 5.1 “Geoecology and Geomorphology”, invites applications for a

Post-Doc Position (m/f).

Project title: Systematic seismic characterisation of geomorphic processes

The successful candidate will work in the broad field of Earth Surface Dynamics, in an international, multi-disciplinary research group, with the aim of furthering the method of seismic monitoring of surface processes. He/she will exploit opportunities offered by prototype-scale experiments and natural laboratories world-wide, accessed through collaborations with local researchers. High quality seismic data will be collected in parallel with independent observations of surface processes to constrain the relations between these processes and their seismic records and to create a library of seismic data of well-constrained geomorphological events for benchmarking of future seismological work.

Tasks:

  • To identify suitable opportunities for seismic monitoring of surface processes world-wide.
  • To create a network of contacts and collaborations with the laboratories where such opportunities exist.
  • To organise and pursue field campaigns to obtain high quality records of geomorphic process events and their seismic signals.
  • To analyze, interpret and report the data from these campaigns and to create a seismological reference library that can be used to interpret seismic observations in otherwise unsurveyed landscapes.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in geology, physical geography, environmental sciences, physics or engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of English in word and text.
  • Solid numerical skills and scripting experience.
  • An ability to work independently and with collaborators in different cultural settings.
  • Prior experience in seismology or signal analysis is of advantage.
