Helmholtz International Fellow Award for GFZ Nominee
After Prof. Amos Agnon of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (see News from 2 October 2012) another GFZ nominee has been awarded the Helmholtz International Fellow Award. Prof. Jérôme Gaillardet is a professor of geochemistry at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, University of Paris Diderot. He was nominated by Prof. Dr. Friedhelm of Blanckenburg (Head of Section 3.4 "Earth-Surface Geochemistry").

SENSUM kick-off-meeting
This week at GFZ , from 17-18 January, there will be the kick-off-meeting of the FP7 SPACE project "SENSUM" (Framework to integrate Space-based and in-situ sENSing for dynamic vUlnerability and recover Monitoring", which is coordinated by Dr. Massimiliano Pittore of the newly formed Centre for Early Warning.

Helmholtz Association funds international research group to study the Andes
Berlin 15, January 2013 - As part of a new funding program the Helmholtz Association supports research groups engaged in joint projects with foreign partner institutions. Eight of these so-called "Helmholtz International Research Groups" were already selected in a first round, including a GFZ joint project with Argentina to explore the Andes. The funded team will receive up to 50,000 euros per year over a period of three years. The foreign partners contribute to the development of the cooperation with the same amount of funding.

GRACE Co-PI is new head of section - professorship with TU Berlin
Since 1 March Professor Frank Flechtner is the new head of the Section 1.2 "Global Geomonitoring and Gravity Field" at the GFZ. He was appointed Professor of Physical Geodesy at the Technical University of Berlin on the same day. Flechtner is Co-Principal Investigator of the satellite mission GRACE-FO.

Award-winning: TRIDEC
 The FP7 Project TRIDEC – Collaborative, Complex and Critical Decision Support in Evolving Crises has been honored with the IRM Global Risk Award 2013 in the category ‘Managing Risks across Boundaries‘. TRIDEC is coordinated by CeGIT at the GFZ.

Humboldt scholarship holder in section 2.3
Dr. Chao Xiong from Wuhan University will be supporting Section 2.3 "Earth's magnetic field" over the next two years. From 03.01.2013 to 28.02.2015, the guest from China will participate with us in the upcoming ESA satellite mission "SWARM".

Expanding the cooperation with India
On 9 May, Dr. Shaylesh Nayak, State Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in Delhi, and his delegation visited the GFZ and the KTB deep laboratory of the GFZ in Windischeschenbach. The visit served the preparation of several cooperation projects between the MoES, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the GFZ.
