On 9 May, Dr. Shaylesh Nayak, State Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in Delhi, and his delegation visited the GFZ and the KTB deep laboratory of the GFZ in Windischeschenbach. The visit served the preparation of several cooperation projects between the MoES, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the GFZ.
As part of the ICDP, the MoES will set up a drill core repository with support from the GFZ to curate samples from the planned drilling. South of Pune in the Western Ghats, an artificial lake regularly creates earthquake after the annual monsoon rains. The earthquake zone is currently being explored with deep drilling to investigate the cause of the quake.
In addition, a cooperation with NGRI on the new secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) at the GFZ is planned, as well as a German-Indian joint project to study the regional climate variability in South Asia.
