Prof. Hermann Lühr is appointed Fellow of the AGU

Prof. Dr. Hermann Lühr, Section 2.3, Earth's magnetic field

During the latest meeting of the American Geophysical Union AGU in San Francisco in December 2010, Professor Hermann Lühr was appointed a Fellow of the AGU. This award is given only to about one in a thousand AGU members. Quoting from the laudation, he received the award "in recognition of his outstanding contributions to geomagnetism and his leadership role in a continuing series of magnetic satellite missions". During the construction of the satellite CHAMP, he was responsible for the design of the measuring instruments; during the mission (2000-2010) he led the interpretation of the magnetic field data. Based on these experiences, the European Space Agency ESA appointed him the Principal Investigator for its magnetic field mission SWARM. SWARM will measure the magnetic field and the upper atmosphere with unprecedented accuracy. The launch is scheduled for mid-2012.
