Exercise in the case of emergency
This year the workshop for Tsunami Early Warning is not only for staff from Indonesia, but also for staff from further countries of the Indian Ocean. The three week work shop 2010 started today in Citeko, south of Jakarta in Western Java. The training will provide theoretical fundamentals and practical training for those concerned with tsunami early warning.

With the foundation of the coordination platform Geo.X a european-wide unique network to help accept these challenges opens to geoscientific research and teaching in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.
23.04.2010 | FOR 741 begins its next 3-year period
The DFG will support the research team 741 "Nanoscale Processes and Geomaterial Properties" for a further three years with 1.6 million €. With this, the DFG recognizes the research work carried out during the 1st funding period (2007 – 2010).
FOR 741 is operated by scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, at the Free University of Berlin and at the Technical University of Berlin, together with colleagues at the University of Vienna, which receives additional funding from the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF). The Speaker for FOR 741 is Professor W. Heinrich, (GFZ), Vice- Speaker is Professor R. Abart (UNIVIE).
04.05.2010 | Tribute to Prof. F. v. Blanckenburg
On Tuesday 04.05.2010, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm von Blanckenburg, Head of GFZ-Section 3.4, the Ralph Alger Bagnold Medal is awarded to Friedhelm von Blanckenburg for the innovative nature and breadth of his geomorphological studies using cosmogenic isotopes on occasion of the EGU General Assembly 2010.
The medal is named after the Britisch geomorphologist Ralph Bagnold.
04.05.2010 | The Aschersleber Globe and the Potsdam Potato
With the inauguration of a three meter high bronze globe, the main work of art for the regional garden show in Saxon-Anhalt was today introduced to the public. The basis of the work created by the Berlin artist, Oliver Störmer, was the shape of the Earth calculated by scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

GFZ training course Istanbul
The 20th of September marked the beginning of the GFZ training course “Seismologie and Seismic Hazard Estimation” in Istanbul, Turkey. The participants were welcomed by representatives of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, the GFZ, the Boĝazici University and the Kandilli Observatory Istanbul.

ILP Second Potsdam Conference

GeoLab: 25 – 29 October 2010
The training course “Geographical Information Systems in Hydrology” has been developed within the frame of the International Research Project CAWa (Central Asian Water). In collaboration with the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (CAIAG), GFZ has tailored the course especially to employees of HydroMet Services of the countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

Inkaba yeAfrica is a collaborative German-South African Earth Science initiative that is both multidisciplinary and intercultural, dovetailing next-generation science and technology with a strong training and capacity-building component. With over 100 scientific contributions, more than half of them from students and young researchers from both countries, this workshop reflects the full scope of modern geoscience research.

On the 26th November, the "Academie de l'Air et de l'Espace" awarded their Grand Prix to Professor Christoph Reigber for his successful achievements in the satellite missions CHAMP and GRACE.

GFZ and CAIAG have invited experts on geodata management to participate in the training course on “Hydrometeorological Monitoring Network and Geodatabases”. The training will give an introduction to the sensor network and monitoring station concept as well as the data processing software architecture developed within the CAWa project.
