GFZ training course Istanbul
The 20th of September marked the beginning of the GFZ training course “Seismologie and Seismic Hazard Estimation” in Istanbul, Turkey. The participants were welcomed by representatives of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, the GFZ, the Boĝazici University and the Kandilli Observatory Istanbul.
During the next five weeks a total of 28 participants from 19 countries including the eastern Mediterranean region, Central Asia and the Near- and Middle East are being tutored by experts from the GFZ and other European research institutes in the field of seismology, seismic data analysis, seismic hazard estimation and the calculation of seismic risk.
The invited participants come from Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Aserbeidschan, Jordan, Tajikistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Georgia, Republic of Macedonia, Pakistan, Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Algeria, Uzbekistan and Turkey. They come from universities, or state research establishments in charge of the seismic surveillance for their country or the seismic hazard estimation for the cities in their respective countries. Within the framework of the course the participants will be educated in modern analyses and evaluation methods of seismology, micro-zoning, modelling and hazard estimation.
Due to GFZ’s numerous research activities in Turkey, this year’s course has been organized together with 5 Turkish partners. During the course tuition will take place at the Kandilli Observatory Istanbul, Tuebitak Gebze, the Kocaeli University, the AFAD Ankara, and the Dokuz Eyluel University Izmir.
