Wind, water, sun, the heat inside the earth − energy sources which never run out. They may provide man with energy in place of fossil fuels and with a minimum of environmental pollution. But such energy must be economically viable. So the prerequisite for its use is the development of technical facilities which will open up these resources at reasonable prices. The Helmholtz Research Programme on Renewable Energy is addressing this task.

The Renewable Energy Programme is concentrating on long-term approaches to research on developing new concepts and materials. These are designed to make the new technologies competitive and to incorporate them into existing energy systems.
