Abstract:
Within the frame of the earthquake research project READINESS thermal and
mineral waters are studied in the eastern Mediterranean. Since 1994 continuously
monitoring field laboratories were installed at springs in Armenia and Turkey to
detect temporal changes of the fluid compositions. The site selection is based
on hydro geological mapping. In this paper examples from the North-Anatolian
Fault Zone are presented, where most systems are influenced by mixing of a deep
fluid with a shallow water component. The mixing leads to intensive ion-exchange
processes with the surrounding rocks and to a cooling of the geothermal waters.
A spectral analysis of the available time series revealed that at least 2 of the
monitored ground water systems are sensitive to earth tidal strain. This means a
strain sensitivity down to 10-8 for periodic strain variations. We think that
those sites are especially favourable as natural stress/strain sensors.
