Publication of scientific data in GFZ
GFZ serves access to scientific data in different ways.
Starting in 2012 the library offers some formats for data publishing which where not available up to now. Following the standard in scientific text publication all data sets get a Document Object Identifier (DOI) assigned, can be cited and are publicly and persistently available.
A further alternative to publish data is offered by the journal: Earth System Science Data (ESSD) or by Geoscience Data Journal.
For any questions concerning data publishing, do not hesitate to contact the library.
Publication of data supplements to complement a text publication
GFZ-Supplements can complement any single text publication.
Many publishing houses are already demanding permanent accessible deposit of data on which a text publication is based (see Nature as an example). Our format serves such requirements and offers the possibility to keep such data persistently available at GFZ.
Benefits of GFZ-Supplements
- Makes it citable (DOI), long time accessibility.
- A temporary access for reviewers is supplied (before publication).
- Simultanous publication of GFZ-Supplements with the refering text publication in journals and books.
- An adequate Creative Commons-License is assigned.
- The datasets can be offered in any structure and format (i.e. also as tables, maps, graphs, animations ...)
Requirements for GFZ-Supplements
- - The data published should be complete and consistent, changes are not allowed.
- As this data publication is closely connected to a certain text publication (and which gives interpretation), further interpretation of the data is not necessarily required.
- Authors and title information.
- Cite it, including the DOI in the text publication.
- Data publications follow the general guidelines for scientific publications of GFZ.
Scientific Technical Report Data STR Data
The GFZ series Scientific Technical Report (STR) of GFZ was extended to include data publication as "Scientific Technical Report Data" (STR Data). GFZ STR Data publishes stand alone data sets, autonomous of a referring publication. Typical for the format report any further interpretation of the data is necessary, but of course a comprehensive description is included.
Different catagories describe the range of data sets which is suitable for the series STR Data:
Compilations: Records can be submitted in unstructured formats (i.e. maps. diagrams, photos, animations, ...)
A description documents it and makes it comprehensible. (Example).
Processible data sets: These data sets are at least semi-structured (i.e. by a mark up language like XML) and is automatically readable. A further reuse is open to persons working in the field.
Reprocessible data sets: These data sets are structured, i.e. well defined tabulated and immediately reprocessible. Primary data is as well documented as the used procedures.
Benefits of STR Data:
- Stand alone publication, citable, long time accessible and disseminated by the library.
- An adequate Creative Commons-License is assigned.
- Formal quality check.
Requirements for STR Data
- A comprehensive description describes the data set. The reliability and provenance of data is documented.
- Authors and title information.
- STR Data follow the general guidelines for scientific publications of GFZ.
