How to

Signing an author contract or a copyright agreement means in most cases transfering all right on your article to the publisher.
Nevertheless, many publishers allow a secondary publication (open access) in our institutional repository (publication database),  but in most cases some restrictions made by publishers must be applied.
Use this possibility to broaden access to your articles!

Usual restrictions are:
  - Original PDF-files are not allowed, use instead final drafts.
- Link to original publication.
- In some cases an embargo must be taken in consideration, e.g. a secondary publication is possible after 6 months.

Through its links to publishers’ websites, Sherpa/Romeo is a useful quick reference guide on publishing restrictions and policies.

- If there is any written contract to articles in compilations/collections publishers have, according to German Copyright Law only for one year exclusive usage rights (§ 38 UrhG). Afterwards a secondary publication is possible without restrictions.

- Also conference papers are in most cases unproblematic to make them openly accessible.

Steps to Open Access

Just send your final draft to openaccess@gfz-potsdam.de  or use the upload feature in the workflow when your section's secretary enters an articles metadata in the publication database.

If an open publication is not possible the text will be archived internally (dark archive).

Metadata and fulltexts will be found by search engines. Reference lists on your personal or section's website will be generated automatically, also linking to fulltexts.
