Post-Doc Research Position (m/f) on “Constrained modelling of electromagnetic and potential field data to investigate the Walvis Ridge magmatism and its interaction with the Kaoko Belt, Namibia”

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the Special Priority Programme SAMPLE (1375: South Atlantic Margin Processes and Links with onshore Evolution) and focuses on three-dimensional interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data acquired in 2011 across the Kaoko Belt in Northern Namibia. General objectives of the SPP SAMPLE and in particular of the MT experiment are to investigate the break-up of the South Atlantic, its interaction with the Walvis Ridge magmatism and pre-existing tectonic structures.

The vacant position is dedicated to a combined/joint interpretation of the existing MT data with potential field data (gravity and magnetics) using 3D forward modelling and inversion. A major scientific challenge is to integrate several geo-scientific observables in order to develop a consistent tectonic model of the Kaoko Belt and to understand processes related to the break-up of the South Atlantic. 

  • Modelling and inversion of magnetotelluric, gravity and magnetic data of Northern Namibia
  • Constraint / Combined / Joint 3D inversion
  • Application of statistical approaches to jointly evaluate different physical parameters
  • Integration of geophysical and geo-scientific data (MT, gravity, magnetics, seismics, geology, petrology, …) into consistent 3D geo-models
  • Publication and Presentation of the results

  • PhD in Geophysics, Physics or Geosciences is mandatory
  • Advanced experience in 3D interpretation, modelling and inversion of magnetotelluric array data
  • Knowledge in potential field modelling
  • Profound experience in integration of various geoscientific observables into a geodynamic context
  • Experience in joint inversion schemes is of advantage
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Good negotiation and diplomatic skills
