Volcano Hazards team

The GFZ Volcano Hazards team works on processes associated with volcanic unrest and eruptions. These are surface deformation, earthquakes, and gravity driven mass movements. By monitoring of active volcanoes the physical processes occurring before and during eruptions are investigated, such as the inflation or deflation of magma chambers, their geometric variations, mechanisms of dike intrusions, stress field changes in the crust, and complex interactions between volcanoes and the surrounding.

The Volcano Hazards team works with       

  • Remote sensing methods: InSAR, photogrammetry, UAV techniques and computer vision
  • Field based techniques: GPS, thermal infrared and in situ probing, structural geolog
  • Modelling: Boundary Element, Finite Element, Discrete Element, Analytical and Laboratory Experimental methods are extensively used

An inderdisciplinary working condition is given at the Volcano Hazards team, including geophysisists,, geologists, geodesists, physics and remote sensing scientist.
