MALLIK 2002, Crosswell seismic experiments

MALLIK

In the early winter/spring of 2002, a scientific drilling program was carried out in the Mackenzie Delta, NW territories, Canada. One main research well and two additional observation wells were drilled to depths of about 1200 m. The main objective is to investigate permafrost gas hydrates in one of the most prominent occurences of its kind. More than 100 scientists worldwide participate in this project (see Mallik ICDP website). A wide range of present gas hydrate research is covered.
The crosswell seismic measurements were carried out by making use of two 1160 m deep observation wells (Mallik 3L-38 and 4L-38) both 42.5 m from and co-planar with the 1188 m deep production research well (5L-38). A high power piezo-ceramic source was used to generate sweeped signals with frequencies between 100 and 2000 Hz recorded with arrays of 8 hydrophones per depth level. A depth range between 800 and 1150 m was covered, with shot and receiver spacings of 0.75 m. High quality data could be collected during the survey which allow for application of a wide range of crosswell seismic methods.
