What does a Geoscientist do? – “Zukunftstag” at GFZ

The 14th „Zukunftstag“ (future career day) for schoolchildren in Brandenburg is very popular this year, with the highest degree of demand per capacity than ever before. At the GFZ, too, the interest was much higher than places available. Thirty girls and boys come to Telegrafenberg in Potsdam today, to learn at the GFZ about the job profile of a geoscientist.

28.04.2016: The 14th „Zukunftstag“ (future career day) for schoolchildren in Brandenburg is very popular this year, with the highest degree of demand per capacity than ever before. At the GFZ, too, the interest was much higher than places available. Thirty girls and boys come to Telegrafenberg in Potsdam today, to learn at the GFZ about the job profile of a geoscientist.

Geosciences are a broad field. As a geoscientist you work in geophysics, geodesy, geology or geoinformatics, for example. With the motto “Adventure Earth” the schoolchildren have the opportunity to get an insight into the everyday work of several geoscientists. After listening to various talks on GFZ research topics several laboratories are visited. In the geodynamic laboratory, for example, the girls and boys get to know how the formation of mountains is investigated. In the SIMS laboratory they see how geoscientists analyze the surface of smallest particles.

Secretary of Education Günter Baaske: „The „Zukunftstag” is for the orientation to career and university studies and aims at encouraging curiosity in gender-untypical jobs in the teenagers.” The „Zukunftstag“ for girls and boys is funded with 50.000 Euro by the European Social Fund (ESF) and is run by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF. It takes place parallel to the nationwide “Girls‘ and Boys‘ Day“. (ak)
