12.09.2016: Last Thursday, Professor Stefano Parolai, Head of GFZ Centre for Early Warning Systems, was reelected as General Secretary of the European Seismological Commission ESC in Trieste, Italy.

During the 34^th ESC’s General Assembly in 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey, Stefano Parolai was for the first time elected General Secretary. Now, during the 35^th General Assembly of the Commission he was confirmed in his office. The ESC promotes the science of seismology within the European and Mediterranean countries. It supports research, scientific cooperation, and the education of young scientists.

Besides his work at the GFZ, Stefano Parolai teaches engineering seismology, surface waves analysis, and inversion methods at the Technical University of Berlin. His research focus is on early warning systems, the development of new methods for the estimation of ground motion variability on short distances during earthquakes. Parolai also works with several aspects of seismic risk assessment and mitigation as well as the interaction of geo-hazards and cascading effects.
