12.07.2016 | Today, the international graduate school StRATEGySurface processes, Tectonics and Georesources: The Andean foreland basin of Argentina“, will officially be inaugurated. The Brandenburg Secretary of State for Science will give a speech on that occasion in Potsdam-Golm. The graduate school is run by the GFZ and the University of Potsdam in cooperation with Argentinean partner universities. Two equally large groups of PhD students will be trained in Potsdam and Argentina.

The aim of this project is to jointly and interdisciplinary train PhD students in geosciences – especially in the fields of structural geology, sedimentology, mineralogy/petrology and geology of mineral deposits. Here, tectonic, climatic, and sedimentologic processes are to be investigated that have an impact on the formation of metallic ressources and hydrocarbons in the Andean foreland of northwest Argentina on different time scales. In October 2015, the first graduate students had started with their work. Now, first results will be presented at the ceremony.

The federal state of Brandenburg is funding the graduate school with 400,000 Euros. Further funding is provided by the German Research Foundation DFG.  Speaker of this project is Prof. Manfred Strecker, University of Potsdam. Co-speaker at GFZ is Prof. Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth, head of GFZ-Department “Geotechnologies”. Further associated GFZ scientists are Prof. Stephan Sobolev, Prof. Achim Brauer, and Dr. Dirk Sachse.„“.
