24.10.2014|Potsdam: The Association of Friends and Supporters of the GFZ (FFGFZ) honored the year's best doctoral dissertation with the Friedrich-Robert-Helmert-Award today.
Five PhD graduates whose works were created in projects at the GFZ have applied for this price endowed with 1,500 EUR. All applications demonsstrate a very high standard of PhD theses at the GFZ. After thorough evaluation by the board of the association Dr. Patricia Martinez-Garzon was selected as the winner. In her dissertation "Seismo-mechanical reservoir characterization from fluid-induced seismicity" Dr. Martinez-Garzon delt with the geomechanical investigation of georeservoirs by the analysis of induced seismicity.
In addition, the board has decided to acknowledge the work of Dr. Gordon Schlolaut with a Recognition Award. Dr. Schlolaut created with the sediments of Lake Suigetsu a varve chronology for the period from 10,000 to 40,000 years before present. His work is a significant contribution to the improvement of the 14C timescale.
