On March 23rd, Dr. Rongjiang Wang, section “Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes”, was awarded the Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz-Price of the Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft (DGG).

Dr. Wang received the price from DGG-Chief Prof. Michael Korn on the 75th annual convention of the DGG. With this price the outstanding scientific schievements in the field of geophysics was honored. Dr. Wang works at the interface of seismology and geodesy. He developed for instance the today well accepted theory of width-related correction of Earth tide – the solid crust is as well affected by the forces causing the oceans tides, twice a day.

The techniques of computer-based seismology, developed by Mr. Wang, are globally applied for investigating wave phenomeny and the inversion of seismograms. Dr. Wang is also engaged in the topics of changes in stress fields in seismologic and geodetic data and was one of the first to correctly include gravitational effects in dislocation models of the half space. Besides his activities at GFZ, Dr. Wang holds several visiting professorships at Chinese Universities. The laudatio was given by BGR-Chief Dr. Hans-Joachim Kümpel.
