28.12.2016 | Satellites at risk: Space weather models need better validation

Accuracy of space weather prediction depends strongly on the quality of the models. A team led by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences demonstrates how errors in the algorithms can lead to wrong predictions. The authors present a new algorithm for modelling of the electron flux in the geosynchronous orbit which is important for telecommunication and navigation satellites.

19.12.2016 | Final meeting for SIBYL project

The final meeting of the project “Seismic monitoring and vulnerability framework for civil protection” SIBYL was held at the GFZ on 7 December, organized by the GFZ Centre for Early Warning Systems. SIBYL was set out to develop an operational framework for Civil Protection authorities for the rapid and cost-effective assessment of the built environment's seismic vulnerability.

16.12.2016 | Graffiti for science

The determination of the spatial distribution of erosive processes is difficult. Especially in rough terrain the installation of measuring devices for a continuous measurement is complicated. This is why to date there are only few data available, especially on millimeter scale. In a new feasibility study, a Swiss-German team of scientists with the participation of Jens Turowski, Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, shows how erosive processes can be visualized by simple painting.

14.12.2016 | Landmarks in the Land of Ideas – Two GFZ projects awarded

Climate protection from space and in 3D. The initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas“ distinguishes projects that „give answers on urgent matters of the future“. Two GFZ projects are among the winners: CoolFarmTool Space from Daniel Spengler, GFZ section Remote Sensing, and the LowCarbonCityLab by Martin Wattenbach, section Hydrology. Today, the projects are officially announced as „landmarks in the Land of Ideas“.

13.12.2016 | Sonja Martens will be president of the EGU ERE-Division

Sonja Martens, Manager of the GFZ Department Geochemistry, has been elected President of the Division “Energy, Resources and the Environment (ERE)” of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). She will take the office at the EGU General Assembly in April 2017 by Chris Juhlin from Uppsala University, who has been running the division since 2013.

09.12.2016 | 30th anniversary of the World Stress Map Project – New global database of the stress state of the Earth's crust

The international World Stress Map Project (WSM) describes the present-day stress state of the Earth’s crust, displays it in global maps, and investigates sources of stress. On its 30th anniversary the project, coordinated by Oliver Heidbach, GFZ section Seismic Hazard and Stress Field, publishes a new global database.
