31.08.2017 | Interview | Humboldt Awardee Poulomi Ganguli “exited to work on compound extremes”

Since August 2017 Humboldt Postdoc fellow Poulomi Ganguli is working in the GFZ section Hydrology. Staying for two years at the GFZ the hydrologist will address how climate change is affecting the risk of a joint occurrence of storm surges and river floods in the North Sea region, the so-called compound flooding events.

03.08.2017 | Timing of floods shifts and reveals climate change impact

Climate change is abstract, however, weather events like extreme rainfalls that cause floods are very real. How are they connected? An international multi-author study led by the University of Vienna and with the participation of the GFZ now demonstrates for the first time that an observable link between climate change and floods exists on continental scale. The results are now published in the scientific journal Science.

An article on the “sleeping beauties” in science recently appeared on my desk (or more accurately, on my desktop). “Sleeping beauties” in science have been defined by van Raan to be publications that go unnoticed for a long time and then suddenly attract a great deal of attention. The “sleeping beauty” concept prompted me to review whether their existence is a component of our current publication practices. Do we have the incentive to develop risky ideas or the time to put together significant, paradigm-shifting papers?

Daniel Harlov, GFZ section Chemistry and Physics of Earth Materials, published a comprehensive summary on the role of halogens in geochemical processes, together with his co-editor Leonid Aranovich,  Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.


27.07.2017 | GFZ lauded as „TOP-Ausbildungsbetrieb“ for apprentices

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Potsdam honored the GFZ as “TOP-Ausbildungsbetrieb” in the State of Brandenburg. The award goes to six companies or institutions which are highly engaged in educating and supporting their apprentices and trainees. Today, Beate Fernengel, President of IHK, handed the trophy to Stefan Schwartze, Administrative Executive Director of GFZ, as well as a certificate and a cheque over 500 Euro.
