Scientific Staff

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With 1280 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the “System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science organization.

For Section 2.3 “Geomagnetism”/ Department 2 “Geophysics” we invite applications for a

Postdoc Position in Geomagnetism (m/f)
Reference No. 58/23/17 G

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic scientist for a 22-month post-doctoral research position at GFZ. The researcher’s primary objective will be to develop a new inversion technique to estimate atmospheric tides in the earth’s upper atmosphere on the basis of the analysis of geomagnetic solar-quiet (Sq) variations. The project aims to make a major step forward in the global monitoring of the upper atmospheric weather. Experience in geomagnetic field data analysis and ionospheric modeling are appreciated.

Tasks:
  • analyse geomagnetic Sq variations using ground-based and satellite magnetometer data
  • develop and use a numerical model of the ionospheric wind dynamo
  • develop an inversion technique that determines atmospheric tides from the magnetic data and ionospheric dynamo model
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent and PhD in geophysics, physics, mathematics or related disciplines
  • strong publication record
  • ability to write/execute new analysis software to undertake the required data analysis and modelling
Starting date Thursday, 01. February 2018
