Branch Offices

In addition to our main campus on Telegrafenberg and three more locations within Potsdam, there are three GFZ locations outside of Potsdam. These are the GFZ observatory in Niemegk, the location Oberpfaffenhofen, and the Deep Crustal Lab in Windischeschenbach.

Direction to Niemegk

By car

The Adolf-Schmidt-Observatorium for Geomagnetism Niemegk can be reached from Berlin via the A9 towards Leipzig/Nürnberg, exit Niemegk (5) zu erreichen. From the south via the A9 towards Berlin, exit Niemegk (5). From exit Niemegk follow the B102 towards Niemegk, after a railroad overpass turn right to the city of Niemegk. Cross the city in the main road. After an obelisk turn right, direction Neuendorf/Kleinmarzehns. Nach approximately 0.5 km turn right and arrive at the observatory after about 0.5 km.

By public transport

Take the train to Belzig. From Belzig Main Station a bus transport goes to Niemegk.


Direction to Oberpfaffenhofen

The GFZ location Oberpfaffenhofen, GFZ section Global Geomonitoring and Gravity Field, is located approximately 25 kilometres west of Munich on the Munich-Lindau highway (A96).

By car

Motorway Munich-Lindau A 96, exit 32, Oberpfaffenhofen. Turn left towards Herrsching/Oberpfaffenhofen/Weßling at the motorway exit traffic lights. You will see a turnoff for the aerodrome area after approximately 800 metres on your left.

By public transport

Take the train to München-Pasing or Munic Main Station (Hauptbahnhof). There change to S-Bahn line S 8 towards Herrsching and alight at Neugilching or Weßling station. You can walk to GFZ from there (approx. 2.5 kilometres from either station).

From Munich Airport take S-Bahn line S1 or S8 towards Munich Main Station (Hauptbahnhof). At Hauptbahnhof or Laim, change to line S8 for Herrsching and alight at Neugilching or Weßling station. You can walk to the GFZ from there (approx. 2.5 kilometres from either station). 

Taxis are available at S-Bahn station Unterpfaffenhofen-Germering and Gilching.


Direction to Windischeschenbach

By car

The KTB Deep Crustal Lab in Windischeschenbach can be reached from the West, by taking the road B15 from Tirschenreuth to Neustadt an der Waldnaab keep west of Schönficht direction Windischeschenbach. From Windischeschenbach onwards, the GEO-Zentrum at the KTB is indicated.

From the South or North, the GEO-Zentrum an der KTB is indicated from the Highway A93, exit Windischeschenbach . 

From the East, you find the indicators on the road B22 from Bayreuth to Weiden shortly after Erbendorf.

By public transport

From the train station Windischeschenbach take the Taxi/Mietbus (0171-7360795; about 50 €), or take a bycicle or footpath (ca. 5 km).
